  • What are Summer Blast Swim Lessons

Summer Blast Swim Lessons is our Learn-to-Swim program.

During the summer months of June and July we will take a break from our 8-week enrollment program and move into two-week long sessions. Using levels 1-4 of the Opelika Swim School, these sessions are designed to guide new swimmers towards a healthy comfort of being around water. And, for more experienced, or older swimmers, the lessons will build their skills towards swimming freestyle and backstroke.

During each 2-week session all levels are offered during each time slot. Progress will be tracked throughout the two weeks. Swimmers who sign up for multiple 2-week sessions will start where they finished the last session.

  • When are the Sessions?

The two-week long sessions run Monday – Wednesday, with classes offered at 4:00, 5:00, and 6:00p.  Each time slot offers all 4 levels.  Only 26 spaces available for each time slot.

This year we will be offering 25 spots to ages 4-13for each time slot.

Due to the demand of our lessons we will not be offering changes to session time and date after registrations. We will only accept cancelations.

  • What Level is my Swimmer?

Take time to read through our different levels. The level you enter is how we will organize for the first class but all swimmers will go through an evaluation process at the start of each session.  For each session and each time slot, all levels will be available.

    Level 1: Water Introduction –
Focus is on finding comfort in the water with the assistance of the instructor.  Skills will be centered on knowing how to get the face wet, blowing bubbles, floating, kicking, and submerging underwater with the assistance of the instructor.  Level 1 is for new swimmers with little or no experience around water and my be fearful of the water.

Level 2: Advanced Water Introduction –
Level 2 has a very similar focus as level 1 but now we are working towards doing skills independently.  At the end of level 2 swimmers will be able to float independently, kick on their own, roll from front to back (and vise versa), and we will begin working on freestyle and backstroke.  This is a great starting spot for swimmers who are comfortable in the water, can float already, but have little control over their movements.

Level 3: Increasing time and distance –
Swimmers starting in level three can float on their own with control and travel in the water by kicking or doing “dog paddle”.  Swimmers starting in level 3 should also be able to jump in the “deep” end and kick back to the wall on their own.  The focus of level three is to learn the full arm movements for freestyle and backstroke.  At the end swimmers will be able to kick and swim independently for approximately 10 yards as well as acquiring the skill to tread water.

Level 4: Proficient Freestyle, Backstroke, and Kicking.
At the end of level 4, swimmers will be able to swim a full 25-yard lap of freestyle and backstroke, and kick 50 yards with a board.  Swimmers looking to start in level 4 are very comfortable in the water but do not have the strength or practice to complete a full length of freestyle or back stroke.  Swimmers who complete level 4 will be encouraged to join the Opelika Parks and Rec swim program to learn the other competitive skills and strokes, with the hopes of competing in a summer swim meet!
